Personality:

When a person hears the word ‘pirate’ it no doubt conjures up images of menacing like characters who, while being driven by greed in its purest of forms, pillage and plunder, terrorize and kill; who love women just as much as their rum and who call their ship, as well as the open sea the closest thing they have to a home. Ruthless and merciless at the best of times, a run in with a pirate was usually not a good one. And for a good portion of his existence, this was the visage of one particularly well known pirate across the realms: Captain Hook.

Of course, everybody has a story. Even pirates.

If someone could see into the core of one Killian Jones, they would no doubt get the glimpse of a very tortured soul that started after the death of his only remaining family: his brother, Liam. It was then only further exacerbated when the woman he loved, Milah, was killed by her estranged husband, Rumpelstiltskin (as the Dark One). Each of their deaths prompted Killian to a darker side - first as a pirate, and then as Captain Hook - that saw a more relentless, vindictive man born and whose only goal in life was seeking vengeance against the ‘crocodile’. However, traces of the man he was before these losses, who believed in honor and loyalty to a cause, can still be seen from time to time. They are however, few and far between, and may appear on the surface to only be motivated by self-interest.

Yet, deep down, there is still a lot of grief that the pirate tries to turn himself away from, only to channel it in ways that don’t leave him looking, or worse, feeling the kind of vulnerability that weakness typically brings. With that follows a resounding sense of pride in him, as there typically is with most men, and his infamous reputation that needs to be upheld becomes his primary goal. This has Killian taking dire measures to mask his softer side from any emotion that threaten to show while also making sure not to allow them to steer him in any event. Sadly, at times, he can be painfully transparent.

This avoidance shows him dodging the prospect of ever loving again. Or, at least loving anyone more than he had Milah. To him, it’s impossible and it only hardens the belief now that he’s not deserving enough to have a repeat of that kind of happiness once more. This shows clearly in how Killian abstains from returning to his womanizing ways after Milah, as most pirates would have no doubt done. He definitely does his best to still appear as a self-centered, pompous ass. And usually it works.

Ages upon ages of being loyal only to himself shifted to acting more in the best interests of others rather than himself. This is only further nurtured by Emma Swan, and others in Storybrooke, who see that Killian is not beyond redemption at all. Still, he has his doubts he will never be a true hero, but he does strive towards being a better person. After all, he spent centuries traversing between the realms looking to defeat a man for taking his beloved Milah as well as any happiness being with her would have brought and look where that got him. Nowhere. And really, it goes without saying that Killian now finds the satisfaction with being on the winning team.

Does that mean Killian himself sees any potential to be a true hero? Sadly, no, and he doesn’t believe he ever will. Centuries of being corrupted by greed and selfishness, all the lies and cheating have quashed any hope of that. Nor does he believe he’s worthy of it, or any kind of happy ending. Killian resigns himself to the simple conclusion that he is a no-good pirate through and through and that whatever he does, is what others see as well. Of course, the more he aligns himself with the ‘heroes’, the more they see him as one of them. At the end of the day, and amusingly enough, he does actually like being trusted.

Some things will never change, however. He will always love his rum, and his cherished Jolly Roger. He will continue to flirt frequently and shamelessly and has a level of arrogance (yes he is quite aware of his devastatingly handsome looks) that rival the likes of any top model. But there is a gentlemanly side to him who is respectful to women beyond some harmless teasing and only unless that woman isn’t trying to hurt and/or threaten him or someone he cares about. However playful he can be, at the root of this pirate there is still a code he lives strictly by; to fight for what he believes in, and what is right.

In the end, Killian undoubtedly can be a hard one to figure out. He can play up the pirate side if he feels it is safer to do so, or, he sometimes will expose a little of the Killian Jones he was before everything happened. He’s never truly been apart of something bigger than himself, and now that he is, Hook is slowly realising the reward is far greater than the pay off.

Powers/Abilities: Killian does not have any magical/supernatural abilities, however he is an expert swordsman, can do all that is expected of any nautical captain (navigate by way of stars, lead a crew, strategy and tactics during attacks).
